I have published six books, including three memoirs, two novels, and a book of non-fiction about rock climbing in Yosemite. I hold a Ph. D. in American Literature from UC Santa Cruz and have taught creative writing at UCSC and also in the MFA program at San Francisco State. I have written for the New York Times Sunday Review and Sunday Magazine, and I am currently a Contributing Editor at Men’s Journal and Food & Wine. Over the years, I have published in California Sunday Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Bon Appetit, Saveur, and many other other publications, and my work has been widely anthologized. In 2011, I won a National Magazine Award and was a finalist for a James Beard Award. In 2016, my profile of Harold McGee won an award for Narrative Food Writing from the IACP.
