I have published six books, including three memoirs, two novels, and a book of non-fiction about rock climbing in Yosemite. I hold a Ph. D. in American Literature from UC Santa Cruz and have taught creative writing at UCSC and also in the MFA program at San Francisco State. I am currently a Contributing Editor at Men’s Journal and a Contributing Writer at Food & Wine. I write with some regularity for the Opinion and Sunday Magazine sections of The New York Times. Over the years, I have published in GQ, Esquire, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Bon Appetit, Saveur, and many other publications. In 2012, I won a National Magazine Award and was a finalist for a James Beard Award.
