I’ve written seven books, including the surfing memoir Caught Inside, A Surfer’s Year on the California Coast. I have a Ph. D. in American Literature from UC Santa Cruz and I’ve taught at both UCSC and San Francisco State. I am currently a Contributing Editor at Men’s Journal, a Contributing Opinion Writer for The New York Times, and a Contributing Writer at Food & Wine. I won a National Magazine Award a while back, and I have been nominated for a James Beard Award. I live in San Francisco with my wife, the writer Elizabeth Weil, and my two daughters.
